What fun to find this guestbook! I'm a student from Dartmouth College and native of Chatham, NJ - though I'm working in Costa Rica for the summer - and came upon this site while writing a history term paper on the Norwegian community in Bay Ridge, Brooklyn. My project involved interviewing a few of my Norwegian family members about growing up in Brooklyn, analyzing gender and cultural transmission, and researching primary documents and websites from Norwegian-American churches, museums, the 17th of May Parade, and much more. I'm proud of my Norwegian heritage and had a lot of fun with this assignment! My mother is Ellen Sande and she attended Trinity when she was growing up, so perhaps some of you remember her. If you'd like to talk to me more, do send me an email! My address is khsk@Dartmouth.edu

Well it is certainly wonderful to have the Guestbook back. Thanks Jackie. I have such fond memories of trinity and all of the people that helped shape my spirtual life. I give thanks to God for the ministry of Trinity, Brooklyn. I learned at Trinity that I was saved by God's Grace and for that I will always thankful. I now live in NJ and am a member of Our Savior's in Edison. My two daughters are married. I have been Blessed by being allowed to serve the Church as the current President of the Koinonia Board of Directors. I continue to give thanks for Pastor Bob and his many years of Leadership at Koinonia and Trinity. Russ Hansen RLHansen14@aol.com

My daughter Heather Geiger went to your summer camp when she was younger. Now that she is twelve she would like to return to camp. She enjoyed the activities and it kept her out of the house and off the streets during the summer. If possible please e-mail me with the information for this year's camp schedule. My address is geiger_barbara@hotmail.com. Thank you for your help. You have a wonderful camp and I look forward to having my daughter participate in it this year. Sincerely,Barbara

As a "die-hard" Brooklyn-ite/Bay Ridge-ite (still living here for 56 years!),I am glad to see the Trinity Guestbook 'back-in-action'. I log on intermittently and enjoy seeing names from the past as well as the thoughts and warm remembrances of our Trinity family from the past. Anne Marie Kenback brought me back in time mentioning Pastor Teig and Pastor Bob ... both so meaningful and the most special people in my 'spiritual journey of life'. Pastor Teig had to be the most wonderful Youth Pastor we could have been blest with; Pastor Bob will always remain the most meaningful Pastor in the life of "we Kvalheim's" as we traveled a journey of illness/diagnosis/ultimate death of our dear daughter, 18-year old Kristi. The Lord provided us with the blessing of Pastor Bob in our lives during this tragedy; as well as Martha Maakestad and the whole Trinity family. Our family will never, ever forget the love, caring and support we received at that time in our lives: June, 1995 to February 8, 1996 when our Kristi passed away. It is such a support to read from others about the richness and depth of Christian values and personal spiritual enrichment and comfort that our dear Trinity has embedded on so many of us over the years. Arent's we the lucky individuals to have been blessed by that great family .... Trinity Lutheran Church ... 46 St. and 4 Ave. ... Brooklyn, New York! As Pastor Bob would say, "Thanks Be to God"! Amen! Janet Pedersen Kvalheim

Hi Trinityites, My father (Ralph Kenback)worked at Trinity for many years and I have early memories of helping him clean the church, dusting the pews and moving the song books in the holders in the back of the pews. I don't think I was much older than 5 years old, I would remember my father telling me to set "two hymnals and a Bible in between". I remember living at 411 - 46th Street, on top of the church offices. I heard the stories of the wild Midwest and enjoyed the 'accent' of all the Pastors and families who came from MN and Iowa to Trinity. Well, now I am living in Minneapolis as of this year. I am trying to locate Berit Aas, her father was one of the Norwegian pastors when I was younger and Berit and I were friends. I understand she lives in Minneapolis but cannot find her name or phone number in the phone book. Someone mentioned she attended Central Lutheran Church, so I visited there but laughingly tried to envision what she looked like about 50 years ago when she may have been about 10. Anyone know how to contact her - if so please let me know? I am inviting Pastor Nervig and Pastor Teig (both now in the Twin Cities) to my house to visit during Thanksgiving when my father Ralph Kenback will be coming to visit me. Any other Trinityites in the area are also invited. Please contact me for time and location. In my business travels this year I got to visit other Trinity participants including Pastor and Mrs. Kverndal (outside of Seattle, WA), Harald and Eva Heiberg (Denton, TX), John and Marie Johnson, Trina and Rolf Christiansen (all in Norway) Greetings to all - Ann Marie Kenback - kenback_am@yahoo.com

My mother, Tillie Olsen(1908-1991) was a member of Trinity and always
had very positive comments about her days as a member of your church.
She always talked about the youth activities and all her friends.
I was baptized in 1939 by Pastor Harry Montgomery. I was aware of
the fact that he lost his life as a Chaplin in Italy during WWII.
I remember a post card that my mother kept with his picture and the
announcment that he died--the card was mailed by the church. I have
been unable to locate it but would appreciate a photo copy if anyone
had the original. My Mother was a member of Our Savior Lutheran Church
in Rego Park, NY, Church of the Good Shepherd-Lutheran Plainview NY
and Christ the Servant Lutheran Church in Allen, TX. She moved to
Texas with me in 1988. It is nice to see that Trinity is still a viable
church after so many years.

I came to this website on the advice of several Brooklynites, who
kindly offered suggestions on how to obtain information on my beloved
late father, Albert, who passed away last June. Dad's mother came
to the U.S. from Finland and they attended Trinity Lutheran when they
lived in Sunset Park during the 1920s, 30s and 40s. I am hoping the
church will have kept records (or a cherished old photo) that may
help me fill in the gaps of my father's early years in Brooklyn. Your
church is quite beautiful and I wish for its continued long life of
worship and tradition in Sunset Park! In loving memory of my father
and Nana Hilda.

Hi Pastor Atik and Trinity Members and Staff!
First off ... congratulations to a wonderful looking website. I fondly remember all of those who helped making me feel home at Trinity when I started attending way back in 1985, as a brand-new LMC chaplain. Singing in the choir, going to Koinonia, singing in Godspell, preaching now and then, playing for Trinity as the Interim Organist .... all those are powerful memories that come back whenever I speak to one of you. Ever since I was ordained in 1990, as an "adopted son of Trinity", I have continued to pray for all of you. My ministry at this time is threefold: as called Director of Worship and Music at Trinity 100th Street in Manhattan, as Social Work Supervisor at Harlem Hospital, and as a member of the faculty at the Blanton-Peale Graduate Institute. Please feel free to contact me anytime. Peace and blessings. Fritz
P.S. The website doesn't have a music section yet; I think that would
be a great addition. FW

Waldorf College is a Lutheran college in Forest City, Iowa. Some Trinityites
have attended this fine school, which has an excellent choral tradition.
For those of you who might be interested, the Waldorf Choir will be
singing in the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts on April 21,2003,
the day after Easter. The choir was invited to join a few select choirs
in a massed concert with a chamber orchestra. The Waldorf Choir is
the only choir performing on their own during the concert. This is
a high honor and a wonderful opportunity for the Choir members. To
learn more about the choir tour to NYC, go to http://www.waldorf.edu/news/releases/02-12-03.htm

Thank you very much, to all the dear friends and family, who in loving
memory of my Mother, Dorthea Melling Larsen, contributed to Trinity
Lutheran Church in Brooklyn. Trinity has been and still remains in
our hearts, as our home church. The church created so much Christian
fellowship and foundations to our faith, our walk throughout life.
Trinity is the church that we use as a measure to compare other churches
to it. So many long time friendships and memories are exemplified
by the sincere expressions of friendship and kindness toward my Mother.
With the Grace of God through Christ, I rest assured that she is now
with the Lord, and now looks upon us, waiting to be reunited again
with family and friends in eternity. She had a long life (96), with
good friends, fellowship and an extended loving family, not only here
in the USA, but in Norway, as well. I pray we all are so kindly blessed.
Thank you again and wish you all that God will Bless you. God Bless
Trinity Lutheran Church and to all those who have contributed, or
will be good and faithful servants. Carry on with Lord's work. I am
wishing all a Very Merry Christmas and Happy New 2003 Year with health
and happiness. Thank you Norman D. Melling, Doylestown PA. nmelling@comcast.net

I was overjoyed to find Trinity's website. My parents Albert Nelson
and Florence Long were married here in 1935, and I was baptized in
1936. We moved from Bay Ridge before I was 3 years old, but I visited
often as my cousins the Seldorsens (June, Ann & Hedy) lived on 53rd
St., and attended Trinty, confirmation, the brownies, everything,
back in the late forities and early fifties. Seeing the picture of
the church brings back many memories, and I'm so happy to find that
Trinity is serving the community after 100 years and still going strong.
I also want to thank Trinity for responding so promptly to my request
for my parents' marriage certificate and my baptismal certificate.
Judging from the guestbook notes, it looks like Jackie Lund is the
person to thank, which I didn't know when I sent a letter of appreciation
to Trinity, just recently.Best wishes to all who serve this wonderful
church. I moved to California a long time ago, but I can never forget
Brooklyn! Lynne

Went to Trinity as a child back in the early 1980's. I have fond memories
of VBS and family retreats to camp Koinoinia. I wish I could remember
more names of people but do remember Pastor Pereyra's name. In '86
my family moved to PA where I have pretty much been since. I miss
NY and like the t-shirt says, I love it now more than ever. It's encouraging

Just discovered the fine web site. My Trinity days began as a child
attending the Norske Avdeling with my parents. I was confirmed in
1942 together with another 108 of us. I have the class photo showing
Pastor Sigmond, Montgomery and Thomte in addition to our 9 teachers.
I have a Trinity Call from April 1944 announcing a rememberence service
for Trinity's service men and women. The honor roll then contained
almost 470 names. I think by this time Pastor Montgomery had been
killed in Italy as Chaplin with the 10th Mtn. Div.. Yes, I have many
fond memories from Sunday school, juniors, mid weeks and finally upstairs
to senior services. Of course we are now scattered to the four winds
but I was well prepared for what came along down through the years
with my solid Trinity heritage.

I have just spoken with your Pastor, a delightful man, who has informed
me about the history of your congregation, and the wonderful ministry
that you do. We lost a member of our congregation in the 1995 bombing
of the Murrah Building, so we understand somewhat what you are going
through with the death of one of your members. I am the music director
at St. Paul's Lutheran Church in Oklahoma City, and my choir would
like to gift a choir anthem to your congregation in memory of Mr.
Lars Qualben, who was killed in the disaster of September 11 The anthem
is titled "Canticle of Hope" and was dedicated to our people in OKC
after our terrorist attack in 1995. It is a strong message of hope
and encouragement. We hope that it will bring you comfort, and that
your choir will be able to sing it for a worship service sometime.
It has been a special song to us, in a time when we needed that message.
God Bless you all.

I was introduced to the Trinity web site by my good friend, John Johansen,
whose comments precede mine. I did not attend Trinity but I grew up
with so many Trinity members in Bay Ridge that I feel some kinship
with you all. My close friends and neighbors on 49th Street are, or
were, whatever the case may be, the Monstruds who lived next door
at 643, Arnold and Roy and their parents; Edith and Victor Anderson
who lived at 641; Selma and Telef Thompsen who lived further down
the block at 669 or 671 and others whose names escape me at the moment.

I was glad to discover that Trinity has a website. The Trinity call
which I still get here in Fanwood, NJ informed me of the Web address.
I don't know many of those who are sending messages as I go back to
a confirmation class of l932 - boy that is a long time ago. Pastor
George Aus of whom I have fond memories conducted our class. Yhen
Pastor Harry Montgomery came along whom everybody liked. WWII and
succeeding eventslike moving to New Jersey cut off my ties with Trinity.
I still see and communicate with some of my contemporaries like Paul
Hansen (Clearwater FL), Sigurd Andersen (Houston, Texas) and Harold
Midtbo (Carollton,Texas). I attend the ELCA Lutheran churches in Lantana,
Fl amd Brant Beach, NJ when I am in their vicinities. I thank God
that I was fortunate enough to come under the influence of the Pastors
and members of Trinity.

As a result of the events of September 11th, the country is experiencing
a rebirth in patriotism and more than ever before turning to God in
prayer. We read daily and have heard all the stories of brave men
and wormen who have and are putting themselves in harms way for our
protection. One of these fine men is JOHN HENRICKSEN (a son of Trinity)
who is a New York City Firefighter and a person to whom (along with
his "brothers" in the FDNY) much thanks and appreciation is due and
I know is given. I would like to ask all who read this, to remember

What a great page and a wonderful way to relive many significant moment
in my Life. Just returned from the reunion in Estes Park CO where
50 of us gathered together to renew acquaintances, and also to meet
some new friends. Plans are underway for a reunion again in 2003 in
California. Will check back in again. Hi Maynard. peace and power

It's so nice to see my godparents (the Larsen's) on the Norwegian
parade page. I was baptized at Trinity in 1960 (no, I don't remember
that day), but I sure remember the church, since we lived up the street
until 1967. I've attended several churches since, but there's nothing
like the first one! God bless you all.

Hi Folks! What a nice surprise to find this website. Many happy memories
from "Juniors"...the Saturday outings, the Sunday newspaper (gossip

It was great open the Trinity Call and find a lot of freinds. I saw
my dear church. The historical ministry of 4th Ave. @46th St. where
many times we preached out site and challenged people to come to Christ.
A dream is a dream. A dream that still invites us to walk together
in a multicultural and multilingual community with one heart, one
soul and one spirit. God bless Trinity!!!

How nice to visit your site. Good info, great pictures! Now a resident
of MD, Bay Ridge was my childhood home. Let me tell you how far BACK
I go! -- back to when Norwegian was spoken on 8th Avenue;when men
-- and women -- wore hats, and not only on Sundays; when the streets
were safe for street games after the papa's drove off to work -- leaving
no cars behind!; when you could walk into any Norwegian Lutheran church
and feel at home; when women swept steps, stoops and sidewalks; kids
were more fearful of bringing bad news from school to their PARENTS
than facing the school principal. Oh, one more little thing -- I knew
Maynard since long ago when he was shorter than me! Greetings and
God's blessing to all who read this!

of the Easter Lilies around the altar, the traditional Processional
Offering, and a rousing Hallelujah Chorus to end the service. Greetings

Just finished reading an article in the Sons of Norway "Viking" magazine,
November 2000 issue, titled "Musical Heritage" which featured the
St. Olaf Choir. It reminded me that Trinity has much the same musical
heritage. On the personal recollection side, my first hearing of Handel's
"Messiah" was in Trinity. I still have, and sometimes play, an original
33 1/3 RPM album of the Trinity Octet, which was recorded in Trinity's
sanctuary. (The cover of that album has long since disappeared.) I'm
trying to remember who the members of that group were. I remember
some (with varying rates of precision): Maynard, Arthur Montgomery,
?Howie Larson's older brother (forgot his name), Dorothea Olsen, ?two
of the Larsen sisters (forgot their names too), and two others whose
names are a current mystery. Maybe someone can refresh my memory.

I am pleased to say that I was confirmed at Trinity in 1969. After
many years of wandering without a church, exploring religious alternatives
and becoming a Unitarian, I am happily a member of Palisades Presbyterian
Church for the last 7 years. I recently became an Elder in the church.
Every time I speak of my church heritage, I am proud to say that I
grew up Lutheran. And when I see this wonderful web page, I know that
my cross-cultural appreciation was a part of my church heritage. I
can remember Pastor Oftedal's messages to the childre and writing
sermon notes during confirmation when Pastor Maakestad preached. It
is great to know that Maynard Atik has come home. May God bless your
ministry in Brooklyn. My mom got the web page address from Joan. We'll
have to plan a visit some Sunday. Tusen takk og ha det godt!
